At 4.02 a.m. this morning, there was an earthquake in the region of Emilia-Romagna, it is about 2 hours from Milan, yet we are awaken by the violent shaking of the bed on which we sleep.
It lasts a second, maybe a bit more..
I check on the kids, my daughter stirs in an unsettled state – I shush her back to sleep. My son is in a sleep so deep not even the bed shaking underneath him could rattle him from his dreams.
I join my husband in the living room and silently stare far out into the night. Standing high above the rest of the city I watch as lights turn on one by one, then slowly-slowly, are turned off again.
The rest of the city goes back to sleep, I stay awake until the first ray of sun lights the sky..and only then I fall into a deep sleep.
