Less than 24 hours after our arrival in the South of France, we have a social schedule that would make a rock star tired. I barely have time to unpack when S – man who I am never supposed to mention in this blog says we are going to Monte Carlo to have dinner. We drive to Monte Carlo, with another couple where we go to one of my favorite restaurants – a place called Maya Bay. Maya Bay is known as one of the ‘in’ spots to go for dinner in Monte Carlo and it is only when I see the new little souvenir stand that they have added in the entry that I begin to wonder if that is still the case. Like any souvenir stand there are t-shirts with Monte Carlo logo’s, beach covers, bracelets, and hats..well this is Monte Carlo after all. It is only when I see the iPhone cover(s) with an assortment of plastic sushi glued on top of it (salmon, tuna, and octopus from what I can tell ) that I begin to wonder if it is still as ‘in’ as it used to be.
Maya Bay offers 2 restaurants, you guessed it – one is a sushi restaurant, the other is Thai. As we walk to our table in the Thai restaurant I am thinking about how grateful I am they didn’t put a curry on the other iPhone covers, I make a face when I think about this, and S- man asks me what’s wrong. I’m about to tell him but then change my mind because maybe he’s really looking forward to a good Thai curry.
We sit down at our table in a lost corner of the restaurant and I’m a bit relieved because we are very far away from the sushi phone covers. We barely have time to open our menu’s when the maitre comes to tell us there has been a mistake and our table is on the terrace, which is totally okay by me as it is still far from the horror corner.
We are re-seated right smack in the middle of the terrace, I look around and see Victoria Silvstedt busily chatting away to a group of people, her long blond hair cascading down her shoulders. (and if you do not live in Europe, you may not know who this is but I can assure you it only takes seeing her once to recognize her) The restaurant is full, the night air is warm, it is the first night out of many to come.
On our way out I can’t help myself as I stop at the glass display case and ask the sales girl how much the sushi iPhone cover costs. She tells me it costs 480 euro. I’m sorry I asked.
